ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The new Ronald McDonald House off North Druid Hills Road has started to take shape.
“So, we’re actually replacing a Ronald McDonald House that used to be located near the Eggleston hospital,” said Marissa Greider, the senior director of philanthropy for the Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities.
Eggleston, the former location of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta before its move into the new Arthur M. Blank Hospital, is three miles away. That might not seem like a lot, but Atlanta can make it a long mile.
“Three miles in Atlanta traffic is pretty tough,” Greider said.
The new location is right next to Arthur M. Blank Hospital.
Throughout the exclusive, hour-long tour of the building, Atlanta News First saw the house’s layout and the improvements made over previous houses.
The new house includes 110 patient rooms, almost double the current capacity; expanded dining options, including specialized areas for children with special feeding needs; and a child’s dream play area.
“One of the crown jewels of the building will be our five-story indoor playscape,” said Greider, pointing to a large opening running from the floor to the ceiling several stories above.
The total cost of the house is $90 million, all but $6 million of which has been raised.
Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities receives roughly 80% of its funds through donations, which is why events like the Red Jacket Golf Classic at the Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta are important. That funding helps pay for lodging for families.
“It just gives us the opportunity to have advanced healthcare better than what’s at home,” said Casey Nash, whose family stays at the house multiple times a year when her son Parker comes for treatment.
The trek from their home outside Rome to Atlanta would be challenging without Ronald McDonald House Charities.
“Sometimes it’s three to three-and-a-half hours depending on traffic,” Nash said of the traffic.
The new facility will give that option to more families, some of whom are put up in hotels due to a lack of space.
Still, the new house marks a large step forward, one that Ronald McDonald House Charities didn’t think they’d be taking so soon.
“We are about 15 years ahead of schedule,” Greiger said.
Another step in keeping families together.
“In my opinion, life-changing,” Nash said.
