22 Apr Nick’s Cozy Corner: Spreading Smiles in the Ronald McDonald Family Room
“They are always there to give a nice greeting and are full of joy,” says Nick Colley of the Atlanta Ronald McDonald Family Room staff, Mekayla Davis and Andrea Pruitt.
The Colley family from Roswell has found comfort in the Family Room at Scottish Rite after Nick, 10, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in July 2023. He is being treated in the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
“Each time we are inpatient, the Ronald McDonald Family Room is the first place Nick wants to go,” says mom Melanie Colley.
The Family Room allows the family to connect with other families and provides opportunities to socialize with the staff, fostering a sense of community within the hospital, Melanie says. “Being able to grab a quick meal has allowed us to focus on Nick’s care without worry.”
Access to snacks and a space to take a break from the hospital room offered a glimmer of comfort during difficult times, Melanie says.
“I wish people knew how truly grateful patients and families are that we have access to such a special place,” Melanie says. “The Family Room provides comfort and peace, allowing us to briefly step away from the rigors of treatment and find companionship in others navigating similar journeys.”
