30 Jun Meet the Hurley Family!
Liam Hurley was diagnosed at birth with polycystic kidney disease also called PKD.This disease causes numerous cysts that are filled with fluid to grow in the kidneys. If the cysts became too large or increase in numbers, this can result in kidney damage.
Liam and his parents, William and Kimberly, have visited Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston to treat this disease many times and have stayed with us at our House closeby. Luckily, Liam and his father were matched for a kidney transplant set for October 2015. Unfortunately, because Liam’s blood pressure was too high, doctors suggested waiting along with starting four rounds of dialysis.
Liam received a kidney from his father, William, May 10, 2016. Even though receiving a new kidney will not cure PKD, this transplant will assist in filtering higher levels of fluid – hoping the transplanted kidney will last longer than a few years. Both Liam and William have healed well while staying at our “home-away-from-home.”
“Our hope is for a long happy life filled with joy and love”. – William and Kimberly Hurley
