01 Aug Volunteer Spotlight: Patti Folio, Family Room H.E.A.R.T. Award Recipient
For Patti Folio, volunteering with Atlanta Ronald McDonald House Charities was a no-brainer. Throughout her life, she’s witnessed how Ronald McDonald House Charities has fostered a sense of relief and granted much-needed respite for families.
When her nephew was born, he was diagnosed with DeGeorge’s Syndrome, which required heart surgery. During his recovery, her family stayed at the House in Philadelphia. Her family’s experience is why she is so passionate about the mission today.
“Ever since then — my nephew is now 23 years old and healthy — I have had a soft spot for the Ronald McDonald House,” Patti says.
That soft spot only grew when her extended family stayed at the House in New York while a cousin’s son was being treated for cancer. When the Ronald McDonald Family Room opened at Scottish Rite, Patti was eager to help. She does weekly shifts and credits the patients for inspiring her to return and in general, inspiring her daily life.
“To allow families to focus all their energy on their sick child is a wonderful thing,” says Patti, who is a grandmother and is always astounded by the sheer strength of the parents and families in the room. “I believe helping others and being involved in the community is essential.”
For her service, Patti is our Ronald McDonald Family Room 2019 H.E.A.R.T. Award volunteer for representing the Atlanta RMHC values of hospitality, excellence, affirmation, respect and teamwork.
